Mike Oldfield, Tubular Bells

Mike Oldfield was nineteen and played almost everything himself, instrument by instrument, across hundreds of overdubs. Tubular Bells arrived in 1973 as the very first release on Virgin Records, two side-long instrumental parts, the first of them ending with Vivian Stanshall announcing each instrument in turn. Its opening theme became famous worldwide through The Exorcist that same year.

One continuous work that grows through repetition, layering and slow metamorphosis, built by one person stacking himself on himself. An album genuinely made to be listened to from beginning to end.
